Social Media Etiquette

That spring break party photo is part of your permanent record. No matter what they say, savvy employers can and do check you out before they offer you a job.

Your social media presence is part of your brand and you need to think about how you want your brand to be perceived. You should deliberately build your brand to present your achievements and accomplishments.

Resume Writing and Interviewing

A resume is a fact sheet about you.

  • Keep the resume brief, summarizing the information into short statements or bullets.
  • Emphasize any awards and/or your outstanding grade point average.
  • Include a cover letter or email with your resume. Taylor the letter to the specific job for which you are applying.
  • Check with your school to see if they have a career center with references and staff to assist you.

The interview is an exchange between the employer and you.

  • While many companies are now business casual, always dress professionally for the interview.
  • Arrive on time and be prepared. A candidate who is prepared and asks questions about the position and the company impresses employers.
  • An interview may have a few levels, including meeting with Human Resources and taking skills tests, so be sure to schedule your time accordingly.
  • Check with your school's career center for resources.
