Workshops Offered Throughout the Year

Not-for-Profit Basics Workshops

Understanding Tax and Reporting Responsibilities
Section 501(c)(3) organizations are regulated by a myriad of federal, state, and local reporting requirements.  Learn what your organization needs to know about its essential corporate documents, directors' and officers' accountability, expanded Form 990 reporting obligations, fundraising, sales and real estate tax liability and exemptions, and employment reporting.  Receive guidance not only for legal compliance but also effective not-for-profit governance.

Setting Up an Accounting System with QuickBooks
Learn the basics of setting up and managing your accounting system. Find out what financial reports your organization needs and how to use them. Using QuickBooks software, see how to set up a computerized accounting system that will help you keep good financial records.

Creating a Budget and Constructing Cash-Flow Projections
A solid budget will serve as a roadmap to move your organization forward, as well as help you obtain and track funding. Learn the basics of how to create a budget and construct cash flow projections that will help your organization achieve its mission.

Setting Up a New Not-for-Profit Organization
Starting a new not-for-profit organization requires great care and prudent planning.  Too many not-for-profits fail before they begin.  The initial corporate documents serve as a foundation for which the organization's future governance, fundraising, legal compliance, and charitable programming will rest.  Learn initial organizational considerations, including the basic corporate and federal tax laws governing and Illinois not-for-profit organization.  Plus, receive a step-by-step overview of the not-for-profit organization formation process.

Accounting/Finance Workshops

Not-for-Profit Audits: The Basics
Receive an overview of the audit process for not-for-profits, including when an audit is needed, choosing an auditor, and preparing for and ensuring a successful audit. Learn how to get the most out of your audit and about your Board's important role in overseeing the audit process. Discuss the effects of recent changes in accounting standards that make audits more challenging for not-for-profits and how you can best prepare your organization to address these challenges.

Internal Controls for Not-for-Profit Organizations
Having strong internal controls is critical to the financial and overall health of your not-for-profit organization, but small not-for-profits generally have a limited number of staff and/or volunteers responsible for the organization's finances. Learn how small not-for-profit organizations can develop strong internal controls over operations and accounting systems. Discuss why having good internal controls procedures in place is so important in light of new auditing standards that will impact the audit of your organization.

The New Form 990
In late 2007, the IRS issued a redesigned Form 990 for the 2008 tax year (returns to be filed in 2009). The redesigned form asks many new questions focused on governance issues and policies. Since Form 990 is a document available for public inspection, the redesigned Form 990 has significant impact on not-for-profit organizations. Discuss the significant changes and the impact it has on an organization's governance policies and procedures.

Fundraising Rules and Regulations
Presented in partnership with the Community Economic Development Law Project
Fundraising activities of a 501(c)(3) are regulated at the local, state and federal levels, and by accounting rules as well. Fundraising activities trigger several tax reporting and compliance issues. Failure to comply can result in costly penalties and challenges to your tax-exempt status. Learn how to keep your development staff and finance managers on top of rules and regulations affecting your not-for-profit organization.

A panel of not-for-profit accounting experts will cover the Three R's of Fundraising Rules:

  • Recording - How donations appear on accounting records (and why the amounts may vary from donor records).
  • Recognizing - How to thank donors, and fulfill your obligations to them both in information they need for tax purposes and to meet conditions of restricted gifts.
  • Reporting - How you report to your auditors and the IRS, and what contact both the organization and donor might expect from either.

Plus, hear about the rules and regulations governing corporate sponsorships.

Board Member Training

Officers and Directors Roles and Responsibilities of Not-for-Profit Board Members
Legally, good intentions are not enough. To ensure a rewarding experience when you volunteer to serve on a nonprofit board, you must be a "prudent person." If you are a current or potential board member or a not-for-profit director, attend this workshop to learn the legal concepts that define board member responsibilities under Illinois law.

Financial Management Responsibilities of Not-for-Profit Board Members
Board members take on the important responsibility of providing governance for their not-for-profit organization.  You may be well versed on the organization's mission, but what about its finances? Part of the role of a board member, whether or not you have a financial background, is to provide financial oversight and protect the assets of the organization.  Learn the very basics of your financial responsibilities: what you need to know and be aware of to ensure a not-for-profit's financial health.
