Writing for INSIGHT
INSIGHT articles generally are written by professional freelance writers, and by Society members and industry experts with publication experience.
Editorial Content
Each issue of INSIGHT includes 3 to 4 feature articles, plus 8 to 10 rotating departments on topics such as Corporate Finance, Young Professionals, Career, Risk, Diversity, Financial Planning, Investing, Tax, Local Economy, World Economy, etc. For an overview of editorial content, visit www.icpas.org/insight.htm.
Editorial Deadlines
INSIGHT assigns articles approximately 4 months ahead of publication. Request current editorial deadlines.
Word Lengths
Typically, departments and columns run between 1,000-1,500 words. Features run between 1,800 and 2,500 words.
"About the Author" Bios
Author bios are welcome for articles contributed by industry experts who would like professional recognition and/or to share contact information with readers. Bio content should not exceed 25 words. Author bios appear in italics at the end of each expert-contributed article.
Columnists
Harvey Coustan, author of Tax Citings, is a retired partner from Ernst & Young, and is presently consulting for RSM McGladrey on policy and organizational matters.
Bradley K. Walton, CPA/CFP/CLU, author of Money’s Worth, is a shareholder in Signature Advisers Group, Ltd., a financial services training and support firm serving accounting practitioners throughout the State of Illinois. A graduate of the University of Illinois and former Elijah Watts Sells Award recipient, Brad is past chairman of the Personal Financial Planning Committee and Personal Financial Planning Conference Task Force of the Illinois CPA Society.
Editorial Policy
All articles/materials received by INSIGHT are submitted for editorial review and approval. INSIGHT will notify potential contributors regarding acceptance within one month of receipt.
Please note that articles accepted for publication may be reslated for a later issue or as an online exclusive.
Freelance and expert contributors must sign and submit an Assignment Sheet and Publication License prior to article publication.
INSIGHT authors will:
- Assure that any and all submitted materials are their own work and not copyrighted or under any legal restriction for publication.
- Disclose any financial, professional or other interests they may have in products or services described in their articles.
- All information that appears in INSIGHT Magazine is current as of approximately three weeks prior to mailing (when the printing process begins).
- Statements or articles of opinion appearing in INSIGHT are not necessarily the views of the Illinois CPA Society. The materials and information contained within INSIGHT are offered as information only, and not as practice, financial, accounting, legal or other professional advice.
- The Illinois CPA Society does not necessarily endorse the non-Society resources, services, etc. that may appear or be referenced in INSIGHT, and makes no representation or warranties about the products or services that they may provide.
Submitting Queries
Queries must be received in writing. Please do not call with article queries.
The following information should accompany your query:
A summary of the story concept and outline.
Complete contact information (including email, fax and mailing address)
Please note: First-time contributors to INSIGHT are required to submit a finished manuscript on spec for print consideration
Submitting Manuscripts
Please email your finished manuscript as a Word file attachment, and paste the article into the email message.
Required manuscript format:
Font: Arial
Size: 10 pt.
Spacing: double
Ink: black
Tabs: None
Justification: Left
Manuscript content guidelines:
Footnotes: Footnotes should not appear in submitted articles. Any references to studies, etc. should be incorporated into the article body.
Fluency: Writing style should appeal to a wide audience; it should not be academic in tone and/or structure.
Sidebars: Sidebars are strongly encouraged, particularly when providing readers with practical tips and/or advice.
Copyheads: For longer articles, headings within the body copy are suggested, in order to ease readability.
All submissions should include:
A headline (title)
A subhead (deck)
A byline
An author's bio (if "expert-contributed.")
A list of individuals interviewed with email addresses included. (All articles are submitted for interviewee fact-checking prior to print.)
Final word count
Indication of whether the article has been previously published.
Disclosure of any financial, professional or other interests the writer has in the products or services described.

Publication License
Freelance and expert contributors must sign and submit an Assignment Sheet and Publication License prior to article publication.
Invoicing
INSIGHT Magazine pays upon acceptance of manuscripts. Please submit your invoice via email.
Your invoice should include:
Your name
Your address and contact information
The working title of your assignment
The issue in which the article is slated to appear
The agreed upon fee
Your Social Security number
Payment will be issued within 30 days of invoice receipt. If for any reason you do not receive payment within this time period, please contact us.
Fees
All first-time professional freelance writers contributing to INSIGHT Magazine, regardless of experience and writing credits, receive a flat fee of $200. Thereafter, the fee structure is as follows:
