Outstanding Educator Awards

The Outstanding Educator Award Task Force is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2010 Outstanding Educator Award

Two Year Award

Mary Zenner 

Mary Zenner is a tenured Accounting instructor at the College of Lake County where she has taught Financial and Managerial courses since 1998. Mary has also served as the Department Chair of Accounting since 2000. She is credited for creating a comprehensive final exam in Accounting Procedures, Financial Accounting, and Managerial Accounting that has greatly enhanced the Accounting Department’s assessment process.  Mary holds a CPA certificate and received her B.A. and M.A. in Accounting from Western Illinois University. 

Four Year Award

Sara Leone

Sandra S. Lang returned to school to earn her PhD in Accounting after working for years in public accounting in Illinois.  She began teaching at McKendree in 1999 and completed her doctorate in 2001.  She is now Chair of the School of Business at the University.  She continues to teach sections of Principles of Accounting I and II, but her area of expertise is Cost Accounting.  In addition, she teaches in the MBA program at McKendree.  Sandra earned her Certified Fraud Examiner designation several years ago and offers various seminars on fraud to the business students.  These are seen as especially beneficial to students going into careers in accounting. 

Donald Tidrick

Donald (Don) Tidrick is the Deloitte Professor of Accountancy at Northern Illinois University. He earned a doctorate from The Ohio State University, an M.B.A. from the University of Wisconsin at Madison, and a B.A. in Accounting from The Ohio State University.  Don is a CPA, CMA (Certified Management Accountant) and CIA (Certified Internal Auditor) and an active member of several accounting organizations including the Illinois CPA Society, American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the American Accounting Association, and Beta Alpha Psi . 

Don became a faculty member at Northern Illinois University in 2000, after having taught at the University of Texas at Austin and Notre Dame University.  His teaching role primarily involves Assurance Services and Financial Statement Auditing though he has taught a variety of courses in previous teaching positions. Don has received numerous awards and honors including the Northern Illinois University Department of Accountancy Excellence in Education Award, the Association of Government Accountants National Author Award and the Beta Alpha Psi Faculty Award.  In 2004, Don also received a prestigious appointment to the Comptroller General’s Educators Advisory Panel which provides input on issues related to higher education. He is only one of two accounting professors in the country to serve on this panel.

Nominate an Outstanding Educator Today!

The Illinois CPA Society is seeking to recognize up to three outstanding accounting educators. Two educator awards will be from 4-year schools—one from a school that offers a graduate accounting program and one from a school that does not.  One educator award will be from a 2-year school.

Nominations are welcomed from any interested person (colleague, student, administrator, etc.). Your nominee must be a full-time Illinois educator at a community college, college, or university with a minimum of 5 years teaching experience who has made continuous and outstanding contributions to the education of accounting students. While administrators may apply for these awards the criteria is focused on teaching and student enrichment. The nominee does not need to hold a doctoral degree or be a member of the Illinois CPA Society, but must be a licensed or registered CPA. The primary criteria to be considered in making the selection are the following factors:

  • Excellence in teaching,
  • Student motivation and mentoring,
  • Educational innovation,
  • Contributions to the academic community, and/or contributions to the accounting profession.
