CHICAGO, June 18, 2018 – The Illinois CPA Society recently honored Penelope Yunker, Ph.D., CPA, Professor Emeritus at Western Illinois University in Macomb with its 2018 Lifetime Achievement Award. Yunker was recognized for demonstrating distinguished service to the Illinois CPA Society and the CPA profession throughout her career.
She received the award on Thursday, June 14 at the Illinois CPA Society’s annual Leadership Recognition Dinner in Chicago.
Yunker started as an assistant professor of accountancy at Western Illinois University in 1979. She was promoted to full professor in 1991 and served as chair of the accountancy department from 1986 until her retirement in 2005. Her varied teaching responsibilities have included principles, intermediate, non-profit accounting, international accounting, and accounting for sports programs.
Yunker served on the Illinois Board of Examiners and was Board Chair from 2006 – 2007. She’s also a former member of the Illinois CPA Society’s Board of Directors and served on several of the Board’s committees and task forces. Currently, she’s the treasurer for the Western Illinois University chapter of the State Universities Annuitants’ Association, the treasurer for WIU’s Learning Is ForEver (LIFE) program, and president of the Macomb Beautiful Association.
In accepting the 2018 Lifetime Achievement Award, Yunker said that the most rewarding aspect of her career in accounting has been the wonderful people she has met along the way – students, faculty colleagues, and professional associates.
“I am deeply grateful to all the many individuals within the academic and professional community who have guided and supported me both personally and professionally. Whenever students ask me for advice about their careers, I tell them that nothing beats accounting.”
