Help make college dreams a reality by volunteering to help high school students complete their financial aid forms.
Completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form is a crucial part of determining a student's eligibility for financial aid. The Illinois CPA Society's CPAs for the Public Interest (CPAsPI), in partnership with the Ladder Up organization, seeks volunteers to help make the dream of college a reality for Chicago area high school students. You can help students and parents navigate the financial questions associated with the form at FAFSA completion workshops.
Volunteers will attend a free, mandatory training session to learn the details of the FAFSA form and receive guidance on how to complete it accurately. You will then volunteer at a FAFSA workshop where you will work directly with students and parents to complete and submit the FAFSA form electronically.
You do not need experience, but you must complete training to volunteer.
A Ladder Up staff member will be present at all events, and hard copies of FAFSA completion manuals will be available for reference. Volunteers DO NOT complete the FAFSA form for the student or the parent, so you are not responsible for the accuracy of the information supplied on the FAFSA form. Volunteers only answer questions, and help students and parents walk through the complex financial questions. The electronic FAFSA form will flag obvious errors or inconsistencies.
There is no CPE issued for the Ladder Up program.
Training sessions are offered from December - February, and are held at the Ladder Up office: 233 S. Wacker Drive, Suite 400, Chicago, IL 60606.
Several FAFSA completion workshops for high school students and their parents are held throughout Chicago from January to April. Once you complete training, you will receive a list of current opportunity dates and locations, so that you can select what works best for you.
