President, Finance and Compliance Management, Claire Burke oversees all of the
operations for Dearborn National’s Finance organization, including accounting, financial reporting, internal audit,
taxes and financial systems. Ms. Burke also is responsible for the Compliance
function at Dearborn National, which includes regulatory oversight, regulatory
operations and privacy. In addition to her Finance and Compliance roles, Ms.
Burke also serves as Chief of Staff to the CEO, which includes leading the
development of the company’s strategic plan, as well as facilitating its
implementation and monitoring and reporting on the execution of its
joined Dearborn National in 2009 as Director of Corporate Planning and
Development. She has 19 years of experience in financial roles within the
insurance industry. Most recently, she served as Divisional Vice President,
Controller and Treasurer at Dearborn National and prior to joining Dearborn
National was Director of Financial Initiatives at Health Care Service
Corporation. Ms. Burke also held management roles at CareFirst Blue Cross Blue

information management consulting organization, where she provided training to
offices across North America. She also worked with an accounting software firm,
offering accounting education courses to clients on site. In addition, she held
positions in internal audit and Accounting with Canadian Pacific, one of the
largest companies in Canada, dual listed in Toronto and New York.
1984, she graduated from McGill University with a Bachelor in Accounting and
Finance. In 1990, she obtained her MBA from Concordia University in
the last 10 years (2010 to 2019), Leah has received the AICPA Outstanding
Discussion Leader Award for her passion, energy and ability to speak at all
levels of professionals and made her a most sought-out speaker.
Eric is a Managing Director in BDO’s State & Local Tax services practice.
He has over 25 years of experience that includes sales/use tax consulting,
planning, and advocacy engagements.
Eric’s sales/use tax consulting practice includes advising clients on states’
power to tax (nexus), taxability of sales/use/lease transactions,
exemptions/credit review, responsible person liability, and transaction
structuring and planning. Eric assists clients quantify and remediate
potential sales/use tax exposures. He also performs state tax due
diligence on buy and sell-side deal transactions, and he assists clients defend
sales/use tax audits.
Eric is experienced in sales/use tax matters nationwide, including Chicago,
Illinois, where he is based. Eric has represented clients in industries
including finance and leasing (including aircraft, railcars, vehicles, vessels),
SaaS, professional services, construction, manufacturing, retailing (including
direct sales marketing), and wholesaling.
Prior to joining BDO, Eric worked at PwC where he managed a team that
provided sales/use tax and personal property tax consulting services to GE
Capital’s various lending and leasing businesses. Prior to joining PwC,
Eric worked in-house at GE Capital, as well as Navistar, a Fortune 500
commercial truck manufacturer. Eric’s state tax career also includes over
12 years practicing law at Horwood, Marcus & Berk, a Chicago-based law firm,
where he represented clients nationwide.
Eric has presented sales/use tax seminars before various organizations,
including the Illinois CPA Society’s Fox Valley Chapter, the American Bar
Association, the Institute for Professionals in Taxation (IPT), and the Chicago
Tax Club. As an adjunct professor, Eric has taught tax and accounting
classes at various Chicago colleges. He is also the co-author of “State
and Local Taxation: Power to Tax,” published by the Illinois Institute for
Continuing Legal Education.
Derek serves as an investment strategist. In this role he provides market,
economic and asset allocation analysis and commentary in support of BMO’s sales
and service efforts across the institutional and intermediary channels. In
addition, he collaborates closely with the BMO Multi-Asset Solutions Team to
translate investment risks and opportunities into solutions for clients and
prospects. He joined the company in 2019.
Derek began his career in the investment industry in 1993 and has served in
various asset allocation roles. Most recently he was CIO, multi-asset solutions
at Nuveen. Prior to this, he was a senior portfolio manager and head of asset
allocation at ING (later Voya). And prior to ING he served as a portfolio
manager and strategist, global investment solutions, at Brinson Partners (later
UBS Global Asset Management).
He holds an M.B.A. from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business
and a B.S. in finance from the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign. In
