Scholarship Programs

The Illinois CPA Society Accounting Scholarship Program is funded by the CPA Endowment Fund of Illinois. The scholarships recognize scholastic achievement and leadership qualities in students who plan to become CPAs. The scholarships are awarded to students who demonstrate strong academic performance and financial need. Students enrolled in an Illinois college or university, pursuing an accounting degree with plans to become a CPA can apply. 

Candidates may apply for multiple scholarships. The Illinois CPA Society Tuition and Textbook Scholarship, Herman J. Neal Accounting Scholarship, and Women's Executive Committee Scholarship all use the same application.

Scholarship Application

Deadline: April 1, 2015

All applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a U.S. citizen or permanent U.S. resident and be an Illinois resident.
  • Be enrolled in an Illinois college or university.
  • Have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0/4.0 or equivalent.
  • Plan to sit for the CPA exam in Illinois within three years of application date, and demonstrate progress in a course of study in accounting.
  • Demonstrate achievement and financial need.

Illinois CPA Society Accounting Scholarship: Multiple scholarships of up to $4,000 each available.

  • Senior or graduate student for the 2015-16 academic year. 

Illinois CPA Society Herman J. Neal Accounting Scholarship: Multiple scholarships of up to $4,000 each are available.

This scholarship was established in honor of the deceased Dr. Herman J. Neal, a distinguished Chicago physician, because of his strong beliefs in opening doors to opportunity, and in the value of education and scholarship for African-Americans.
  • Ethnicity is African-American.
  • Junior, senior or graduate student for the 2015-16 academic year.

Illinois CPA Society Women’s Executive Committee Advancing Women in Accounting Scholarship: Multiple scholarships of up to $4,000 each are available.

This scholarship was established by the Illinois CPA Society Women’s Executive Committee to create advancement opportunities for women in the CPA profession in Illinois. This scholarship program is supported by individuals, CPA firms, and companies who are committed to giving back to help ensure the success of other women. A lead donor to this scholarship fund is Ernst & Young LLP. 

  • Gender is female.
  • Demonstrate leadership potential.
  • Senior or graduate student for the 2015-16 academic year.

Illinois CPA Society Accounting Textbook Scholarship: Multiple scholarships of $500 each are available.

This scholarship reimburses for the cost of books and required classroom materials. This scholarship does not cover the cost of tuition or CPA exam review courses.
  • Junior, senior or graduate student for the 2015-16 academic year.

CPA Exam Award Program
Awards approximately $750 for reimbursement of NASBA fee
Eligibility:

  • Not be reimbursed for CPA exam fees by an employer
  • Have pre-approved status by Illinois Board of Examiners and agree to take at least one part within nine months of the date on the application approval letter from the Board of Examiners. Applicants for this award must not have completed all four parts of the exam, but may apply with a portion of the exam completed.
  • Complete all four parts of the exam within 18 months of being approved to test by the Illinois Board of Examiners. If all four parts are not completed within 18 months, candidates may be asked to refund all, or a portion of the award based on number of parts completed.
  • Maintain a current or final cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0 or equivalent
  • U.S. citizen or permanent resident
  • Permanent resident of Illinois

Mary T. Washington Wylie Opportunity Fund
Internship Preparation Program: January 5-7, 2015 in Chicago (Check back in the Fall for applications for the 2016 program.)

Eligibility:

  • Be a college student who is an underrepresented racial/ethnic minority in the accounting profession (e.g., African American, Asian, Hispanic/Latino, Native American, etc.)
  • Be enrolled in an Illinois college as a sophomore or junior for the 2014-15 academic year. 
  • Be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent U.S. Resident.
  • Currently or intending to major in accounting and ultimately become a CPA.
  • Completion of an introductory accounting course is preferred. 
  • Have a 3.0/4.0 GPA or equivalent
  • Not currently committed to a particular accounting firm for an internship.
  • Not already participated in the Mary T. Washington Wylie Internship Preparation Program. 
  • Submit complete application, transcript, and recommendation letter from a current or past accounting professor, academic advisor, employer, mentor, volunteer manager, etc. 
  • Available to attend the program January 5-7, 2015 in Chicago. 

University-Based Scholarship Programs

Arthur R. Wyatt Accounting Scholarship
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
Arthur R. Wyatt, Adjunct Professor of Accountancy, established this scholarship program for accounting students at the University of Illinois. This program provides up to $4,000 in scholarship support to a student who will begin their fifth year of education in the upcoming academic year. Applicants should demonstrate a dedication to becoming a CPA, as well as financial need.

Needles/Snow/Wish Success Through Scholarship 
DePaul University
Belverd E. Needles Jr., William B. Snow and Ernest R. Wish, in partnership with Ledger & Quill and DePaul University, established this scholarship program for accounting students at DePaul University. This program provides scholarships to students who are enrolled as intended accounting majors entering their junior year, or declared accounting majors entering their senior year. Applicants should demonstrate a dedication to becoming a CPA, as well as financial need.

Kenneth J. and Jacqueline M. Hull Accounting Scholarship
Southern Illinois University Carbondale
Kenneth J. Hull, former president and CEO of Follett Corporation, established this scholarship program for accounting students at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. This program provides scholarships to students, freshmen through seniors, interested in joining the accounting profession.

Edilberto C. and Carmelita M. Ortiz Accounting Scholarship
Northern Illinois University
Edilberto C. Ortiz, managing partner of E. C. Ortiz & Co., LLP, established this scholarship program for accounting students at Northern Illinois University. This program provides scholarships to junior, senior or graduate students who maintain an overall 3.0/4.0 GPA or equivalent.
