Joining a committee or advisory group is a meaningful way to meet new people with shared interests, develop new skills, gain new perspectives, and make an impact on your community. Committee terms run from April 1 – March 31, but we accept volunteers year-round. Review the group descriptions below and submit a short application to be considered.

SENIOR LEVEL AND SPECIALIZED

The Accounting Principles Committee seeks to further the development and recognition of generally accepted accounting principles promulgated by the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB), the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB), and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), and to enhance members' understanding and promote their implementation and compliance with these principles. This is a senior level committee; successful applicants demonstrate strong subject matter experience and knowledge.

The Audit and Assurance Services Committee seeks to further the development and recognition of generally accepted auditing, attestation and quality control standards promulgated by the AICPA Auditing Standards Board (ASB), the AICPA Accounting and Review Services Committee (ARSC), and the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB), and to enhance members' understanding and promotes their compliance with these standards. This is a senior level committee; successful applicants demonstrate strong subject matter experience and knowledge.

The Ethics Committee is responsible for interpreting and enforcing the ICPAS Code of Professional Conduct and Bylaws. The ICPAS, in accordance with the provisions detailed in the Joint Ethics Enforcement Program (JEEP) agreement with the AICPA, will conduct investigations of alleged misconduct made by the general public, other professionals and government agencies who are members of the ICPAS. This is a senior level committee; successful applicants demonstrate strong subject matter experience and knowledge.

The Governmental Executive Committee encourages excellence in the performance of professional services related to accounting for and auditing of federal, state, and local governmental units and agencies. This committee develops comments, clarifications, and suggested revisions to proposed and existing technical standards and relevant regulations and legislation. This is a senior committee; successful applicants demonstrate strong subject matter experience and knowledge.

The Governmental Report Review Committee coordinates the ICPAS’ Governmental Report Review Program. They annually review financial statements of Illinois units of local Governmental and related independent auditor’s reports issued by public accountants. These include school districts, cities, villages, counties, townships, and special districts. They help prepare for an annual governmental report review course. This is a senior level committee; successful applicants demonstrate strong subject matter experience and knowledge.

The Peer Review Acceptance Committee monitors the administration of the AICPA Peer Review Program for all states administered by the ICPAS/Peer Review Alliance. They review, discuss, evaluate, and approve peer review documents of firms enrolled in the Peer Review Program and advise the ICPAS Peer Review Department on its operation of the program. This is a senior level committee; successful applicants demonstrate strong subject matter experience and knowledge. Not currently accepting new volunteers.

The Taxation Executive Committee disseminates information about taxation to members and the public, monitors and comments on proposed federal/state tax legislation and revisions to IRS/IDOR regulations, and maintains liaison with the appropriate taxing authorities. This is a senior level committee; successful applicants demonstrate strong subject matter experience and knowledge.

The Not-for-Profit Organizations Committee encourages excellence in the management of not-for-profit entities and in the performance of professional services for these not-for-profit organizations through member education and outreach. When appropriate, they recommend improvement in Illinois laws, regulations, and administration.

The Tax Advisory Group monitors emerging issues and hot topics impacting membership and serve as the liaison with the Tax Executive and other Tax Committees on recommended follow-up actions.

The Taxation Estate, Gift and Trusts Committee monitors, responds to, and advises ICPAS members about current developments related to estate and gift taxes, and fiduciary income tax and accounting issues, particularly IRS communications regarding significant revisions to regulations and federal and state legislation.

The Taxation Flow-Through Entities Committee monitors, responds to, and advises members about current developments related to the taxation of flow-through entities, particularly IRS communications regarding significant revisions to regulations and legislation. Specific areas of responsibility include S corporations, partnerships, limited liability companies, and real estate.

The Taxation Flow-Through Entities Committee monitors, responds to, and advises members about current developments related to the taxation of flow-through entities, particularly IRS communications regarding significant revisions to regulations and legislation. Specific areas of responsibility include S corporations, partnerships, limited liability companies, and real estate.

The Taxation International Committee monitors, responds to, and advises members about current developments related to international taxation, particularly IRS communications regarding significant revisions to regulations and legislation affecting cross-border tax issue reporting and planning, ratification of new or modified U.S. tax treaties, and changes in IRS enforcement relating to international tax issues.

The Taxation Practice and Procedures Committee monitors, responds to, and advises members about current developments related to practice and procedures issues, particularly IRS communications regarding significant revisions to regulations, the AICPA “Statements on Standards for Tax Services,” and legislation. Specific areas of responsibility include Circular 230, tax preparer penalties, professional tax standards, and best practices in this area.

The Taxation State and Local Committee monitors, responds to, and advises members about current developments related to state and local taxes, particularly significant revisions to tax rules and regulations, and legislation in Illinois and other states.

RECOGNITION AND ENGAGEMENT

The Awards Committee seeks nominations, reviews applications, and recommends award recipients for the ICPAS Lester H. McKeever Jr. Advancing Diversity Awards, Women to Watch Awards, Outstanding Educator Awards, Joshua D. Lance Young Professionals Leadership Award, and Beacon Award.

The CPA Exam Award Committee oversees the application information and selection process twice a year for the ICPAS CPA Exam Award, Edilberto C. Ortiz and Jovencio P. Mangahas CPA Exam Award, and the Surendra and Shanta Daga CPA Exam Award scholarships, which reimburse students and CPA candidates up to $1,000 for costs associated with taking the CPA exam. They typically review applications online in February and July.

The Lifetime Achievement Award Committee seeks nominations, reviews candidates, and recommends award recipients for the ICPAS Lifetime Achievement Award.

The Mary T. Washington Wylie Internship Preparation Program Selection Committee reviews applications and identifies the most qualified candidates for the annual program. They typically review applications online in late November to early December.

The Nominating Committee seeks a good balance of skills and expertise and nominates, in accordance with the ICPAS Bylaws, a slate of officers and directors to serve on the ICPAS Board of Directors.

The Scholarship Selection Committee oversees the application information and selection process for Academic Scholarships, including the ICPAS Accounting Scholarships, Herman J. Neal Accounting Scholarships, James A. Sikich Visionary Scholarships, and Women’s Executive Committee Advancing Women in Accounting Scholarships.

The Women’s Committee advises on the development of professional development programs, connections events, mentoring programs, and other relevant activities of value to women in the finance and accounting profession.

The Young Leaders Advisory Council seeks to increase awareness, relevancy, and membership, among accounting and finance professionals under 35 years old through programs, services, and opportunities for involvement that strengthen their professional credibility, connections, and career.
