Professional Presence Online

Make a Strong First Impression

Your online presence is often the first place employers go to learn about you. A strong LinkedIn profile and thoughtful digital footprint can help you stand out in a competitive accounting job market.

Whether you’re applying for internships or your first full-time role, these tips will help you build an online presence that reflects your goals and potential.

  • Google yourself and review privacy settings to see what employers might find. Clean up anything outdated or public you’d rather not share.

  • Avoid unprofessional language, memes, or controversial content on public profiles.

  • Be selective about accepting connection requests.

  • Respond professionally to messages, even unexpected ones.

  • Use a professional-looking headshot with good lighting (a clear phone photo works fine).

  • Craft a strong headline like: “Accounting Student | Aspiring CPA | Interested in Audit & Analytics.”

  • Include a short summary that highlights your interests and what you’re working toward.

  • Make sure your work experience, education, and volunteer activities are up to date.

  • Add relevant coursework, projects, and leadership experiences to fill experience gaps.

  • Include certifications and skills (Excel, Power BI, QuickBooks, CPA eligibility, etc.).

  • Use keywords like “audit intern,” “tax associate,” or “CPA candidate” to help recruiters find you.

  • Turn on “Open to Work” to signal interest in internships or entry-level roles.

  • Share class projects, events, or articles with a short personal comment, and engage with posts that reflect your interests once or twice per semester.

  • Search for alumni in accounting and send polite, thoughtful connection requests.

  • Follow accounting firms, organizations, thought leaders, and recruiters to stay updated on opportunities. Don’t forget to follow the  Illinois CPA Society

  • Join groups for students, young professionals, and accounting topics to expand your network.
