Make a difference for individuals and families-in-need

gen next 310The Illinois CPA Society's CPAs for the Public Interest and Ladder Up are recruiting volunteer tax preparers for the 2020 tax season. Volunteers offer free federal and state tax return preparation for low-income individuals and families throughout Illinois.

Ladder Up will be offering three different service models this year:

Virtual: Clients will upload their tax documents to be prepared and reviewed by volunteers completely remotely from their homes.

Drop-off: These sites will serve as locations where clients can receive assistance preparing their tax documents for virtual completion by volunteers. Ladder Up will need volunteers to staff drop-off sites to assist with reviewing clients' tax situations and ensuring they have all necessary information/documents for preparation.

In-person: Clients will schedule an appointment to have their return completed while they remain at the tax site. Ladder Up will need volunteers who feel comfortable serving at in-person sites. All appropriate safety precautions will be in place.

Help others and give back by registering with Ladder Up today! All volunteer training will be completed virtually this year!

How It Works

  • Get involved: Volunteers can create an account with Ladder Up and register for alerts now. Volunteer recruiting and training will take place from November through January.
  • Get trained: All volunteer training is provided by Ladder Up, and no tax experience is needed! Volunteer training will be virtual this year.
  • Get CPE: CPAs can earn Continuing Professional Education (CPE) credits after completing volunteer training. Only 25 volunteer hours are required.
  • Get going: Volunteers offering virtual services can volunteer from anywhere, and there are more than a dozen volunteer sites in northeastern Illinois and in Springfield. Location information for all in-person sites is available here. Volunteer hours are flexible, but Ladder Up recommends a commitment of once per week for four hours as ideal.

This volunteer program is organized by CPAs for the Public Interest, the community service arm of the Illinois CPA Society, which links financial management professionals with not-for-profit organizations and community service projects in Illinois.
