CHICAGO, June 26, 2025 – The Illinois CPA Society (ICPAS)—one of the largest state associations in the nation serving the certified public accountant (CPA) professional community—proudly announces Joseph “Joe” F. Bigane III, CPA, as the recipient of its 2025 Lifetime Achievement Award. This esteemed award is the highest honor bestowed on an ICPAS member who has demonstrated distinguished service to the Society and the accounting profession.
Bigane earned his CPA credential in 1969 and became an ICPAS member in 1974. Over the past 56 years, he’s been instrumental in the field of taxation, with a specific focus on state and local taxes (SALT). Among his many nominations for this award, Bigane was repeatedly described as a “legend,” “staple,” and “thought leader” by his peers. Bigane boasts a long track record of drafting legislation and regulations, advising taxing authorities, founding and speaking at industry educational engagements, mentoring CPAs and tax professionals, representing ICPAS and other organizations in the media, and serving on numerous boards, committees, and task forces. ICPAS has recognized Bigane previously on multiple occasions for his volunteer contributions.
Bigane spent much of his career at Wolf & Company LLP (1981-2012), where he served as a partner before transitioning to the firm’s director of state and local taxes. Following the firm’s merger with BKD LLP in 2014, Bigane stayed on until founding his own SALT firm, JFB Tax Consulting LLC, in 2015, which he continues to lead today. Bigane is also admitted to practice before the United States Tax Court, a privilege for which nonattorneys must meet strict qualifications.
“I’m always humbled by the accomplishments and lifelong service of the incredible recipients of this award. Like those who’ve come before him, it’s an honor for us to recognize Joe with the 2025 Lifetime Achievement Award,” says Geoffrey Brown, CAE, ICPAS president and CEO. “From his decades of volunteer service to the vast expertise he’s shared with thousands of professionals across the nation as a trusted educator, Joe has had an outsized impact on the Society and the profession. He truly embodies the spirit and intent of this honor.”
At the ICPAS Leadership Recognition and Awards Dinner on June 25, 2025, Bigane reflected on his 56-year career and expressed gratitude for the people and experiences that shaped his professional journey. With many family members and friends in attendance, Bigane said, “I want to thank the many who guided and mentored me throughout my career: Fellow CPAs, especially committee members that I’ve had the pleasure of interacting with for years, and the leadership of the Society who were always there to assist. But, most of all, thank you to my wife and children who allowed me to bring the work home and focus on the client. While a ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ feels like a fond farewell ahead of a ride off into the sunset, it’s my hope that I may remain healthy and continue participating in committees, conferences, and chapter meetings for many years to come.”
